Amy Who?

I think I may have acquired a couple more readers since my three-part review of last weekend’s Official Doctor Who Convention (Part 1Part 2Part 3), if you are one of them, thank you so much for visiting. It is amazing how actually being bothered to write something will encourage folk to click. I’m not sure if I’ve ever had 100+ visitors in a single day before now. Colour me chuffed. But, build it and they will come, as I was once told. So, here is an effort to keep the momentum going by popping back in time by a week or so to belatedly cover THE pre-convention Doctor Who news story.

Of course, in the build up to the convention all the chatter was about the recently announced casting of Jenna-Louise Coleman as the “new companion”, including inevitable speculation as to “Will she or won’t she show up at the con?“, or “Will we or won’t we get any more news about her?” The answer to the first was “No“, which was not great surprise given that the focus of everything there was on Series Five and Six. Also, I’m not entirely sure that it would be healthy for a young woman’s first experience of Doctor Who to be getting wheeled out in front of 3,000 baying Whovians… it’d probably scare her to death and she’d refuse to turn up to work on the Monday morning. The answer to the second question was a “Pretty much, no” as well. Other than a few comments from Andy Pryor (Casting Director) about the dingy basement rooms in which the auditions were carried out, we didn’t get so much as a whisper of “JLC” news. (We refer to her as JLC now, ya know… Justin Lee Collins is gutted).

By the way, the picture above comes from a new set of photos published online by the mighty Radio Times, following on from their exclusive feature that I blogged about briefly on Tuesday. I suspect that these are not “in character” pictures, but she’s looking like she’s pleased about the news at any rate. Elsewhere in JLC news, yer actual Keith ‘Telly’ Topping has the latest on avacado-gate. On a personal note, I have to confess that I was a tad disappointed that hot favourite, Sophia Myles didn’t get the part (noting, for what it’s worth, that there is not a soul who knows whether or not she was ever even considered). There was a selection of circumstantial “evidence” that added weight to the rumour (a series of tweets between her and Steven Moffat, a trip to Spain, etc) but I just adored her character in The Girl In The Fireplace and thought that there was a lot more that could have been explored there. I remain convinced that JLC will be a star though
