Radio Times – The Companions

A rather lovely slice of Doctor Who merchandise dropped on to the doormat this morning. Following hot on the heels from their successful “2005 to 2010” special at the start of this year, the folks at Radio Times have released another send-away special entitled “The Companions”. 162 gloriously colourful pages of behind the scenes photographs, studio pictures and shots from the show: many of them never seen before. I’m sure that there are uber-fans out there who will tell us which ones exactly are the new ones, but to be honest, it doesn’t really matter because only very rarely do they get presented in such an impressive way. The weight and quality of the publication evokes a feeling of reverence in the reader – this volume and its predecessor will go on to become hugely collectable I am sure.

The three (!) current companions adorn the cover alongside Matt Smith’s Doctor, with Amy striking a pose in front of (auton) Rory and (is-she-a-companion-or-not?) River. And inside the covers there a 50 old Radio Times’ covers featuring our favourite Time Lord. The sequence of companions is, refreshingly, in alphabetical order. Typically, this kind of thing would be a chronological affair. However, that would result in an imbalanced magazine with possibly shorter features and more black and white images in front and, more content from the later series being available for the end. [It’s a bit disingenuous to describe this as a “magazine” by the way, it is a hefty enough tome to be described as a paperback book if we’re being honest about these things.] I have to confess that I haven’t read much of the text so far as the pictures jump off the page and draw the eye away but there are plenty of snippets of interviews with the actors who play the 50 companions featured as well as a few notable others. Even Kamelion gets a page to himself but don’t let that put you off.

The back cover proclaims “Spring 2011: The Journey Continues” with a nice sillhouetted photo of Matt Smith. Originally, I assumed that this referred to the series but the more I think about it, the more I reckon this means that another Radio Times special may become available. And that would be fantatsic news… it’s a top quality piece of merchandise.

  1. Cheers. I will probably end up looking on ebay for it then. I don't often get the RT so must have missed it.

Are you looking forward to the Christmas Special?

Sound like it should be a good one.

Hi Adam – there was a phone number to call and leave your contact and payment details with, published in the weekly Radio Times a few weeks ago. (0844 5439836). Not sure if the number will still be live but worth a go if you fancy it. The other way is to do a search on eBay but the prices are nuts at the moment.
