Unlikely Victory

How Was That For You?

The second test between England and New Zealand looked odds on to be another tale of woe to add to England’s back catalogue of miserable recent history. Facing a first innings deficit of 179 runs (after a woeful batting display yesterday morning) seemed to be an insurmountable task but some inspiration from the man they call “Monty” and a miraculously rejuvenated batting display meant that England made the victory target with relative ease. What a perfect way to spend a couple of hours on a Bank Holiday afternoon.  It wasn’t quite the dramatic day’s cricket that the overnight score might have promised but it was certainly rewarding to see the team grab victory from the jaws of defeat and could be just the tonic for a good summer.  It will take a gragantuan performance from New Zealand to pick themselves up from here and, on the assumption that the tourists fail in this, all bodes well for the more challenging arrival of the South Africans later in the summer.  Lots of one-day and Twenty20 thrashes to come in the meantime too, so, in the absence of local interest in the forthcoming Euro2008, cricket may will get another moment in the headlines… if only the weather holds out.
