Jools' Jewels

Christmas Review #7 of 12

The Christmas reviews continue (despite the fact that all seems like months ago now) and, even though the dreaded flu struck me down over the holidays and forced the cancelation of plans for a big party to see in the New Year, it did give me the opportunity to curl up (with nothing stronger than a hot Ribena), huddled under a duvet and to enjoy the delights of Jools Holland’s Annual Hootenanny as the clock passed midnight. This really is a gem of a show, in which a cast of what seems like hundreds gather around for a good old shindig and amiable host, Jools, bumbles around like everyone’s favourite uncle and tries to conduct brief interviews with the stars some, if not most, of whom who seem to have been on the booze for quite some while by the time things get underway. Who cares if it’s recorded well in advance of the big night because it is feelgood fodder that clearly mitigates cold and flu symptoms as effectively as any paracetemol based medicinal drink.

Highlights for me included….

  • Kylie’s soulfull version of “I Should Be So Lucky” (no, really!) with inevitable accompaniment from JH
  • The return of Seasick Steve, whose rise up the iTunes download charts must be inpart due to these appearances
  • Madness, Mika and Macca
  • Sir Paul and Kylie duetting
  • Celeb spotting in the audience, even though it did seem as if David Tennant and John Simm were lingering around in the background of almost every shot.
