What a Relief

Gary holds court in the last night’s Sport Relief Telethon

There is something watchable, while at the same time cringeworthy about the BBC’s twice-yearly telethon nights. Every year we are treated to Wogan’s Children in Need night in November, with Comic Relief and its younger sibling, Sport Relief taking it in turns earlier in the year. Last night it was the turn of Sport Relief to take centre stage as Gary Linekar (oddly now, more suited to light entertainment than sport), the heavily pregnant Davina McCall (loaned to the Beeb from C4’s Big Brother) and (the omnipresent) Chris Evans presided over the typical mix of sketches, parodies, light-hearted features and heart-breaking reports from the neediest areas of the UK and the world. By their very nature these shows tend to produce hit-and-miss television (well, mainly “miss”) but that should not distract from the worthiness of the cause. The highlights of the year being the David Walliam’s Channel swim and, dare I say it, McFly’s remarkably not bad version of Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”. It’s not too late to follow the link and donate.
