The Descent of Man

Green Wing 4

Alan Statham lights up the scene

If you haven’t been watching the Green Wing on Channel 4 on Friday nights, then I have a question for you…. why not?  It’s an ensemble work where the seven or eight regulars get a chance to act out a series of surreal and wildly funny situations that weave together into a patchwork of a storyline set in a hospital.  The highlight of each and every episode though is the performance of Mark Heap as radiologist, Alan Statham.  He is a man in the very middle of an extraordinary breakdown and has scenes of such cringeworthy social incompetence that even David Brent would blush.  The physical similarities he shares with another comedy legend, John Cleese, only add to the Python-esque feel that permeates events.   Just as, all those years ago, nobody expected the Spanish Inquisition, nobody watching the Green Wing expected Dr Statham to set fire to himself in such a beautifully executed scene that concluded with his plunge into a birthing pool.  Switch off your mind and float along with this brilliance.
