Better Late Than Never

A bulging net signals an unlikely victory

Apologies for the lateness of this posting, but it’s about time I caught up on reporting the recent observations on the TV world. A couple of weeks ago, I was looking forward to this England friendly, with all the eager anticipation of a trip to the dentist. The football season has suffered a paucity of watchable and/or noteworthy matches since the summer break ended back in August, and a meaningless friendly staged in the most neutral of countries held little to appeal… except of course, for the quality of the opponents. Another England Argentina classic couldn’t be on the cards again, could it? Well, yes actually. A five-goal thriller served to remind all the fans that this is, after all, a World Cup year, and that this England team are not so bad. Rooney, Beckham, Rooney, Owen, Rooney, Lampard, Rooney, Robinson, and the rest all showed some pride and passion that had been lacking of late. One early November evening in Geneva, football came back, and next summer, 40 years on, will we be singing their praises even more loudly?
